International Scientific Committee

Comitè Científic Internacional

Presided over by the then President of the Government of Catalonia, Pasqual Maragall, Linguamón – House of Languages constituted its International Scientific Committee on 11th July 2006. The committee is made up of a group of internationally renowned experts, and its purpose is to advise on contents and scientific contributions in addition to promoting the initiative.

The Committee is chaired by the prestigious Welsh linguist David Crystal, who delivered a speech on the importance of vitality of languages, and is made up of experts in various fields of knowledge including linguistics, sociology and economics. 
 
 

The members are as follows:

President. David Crystal, Wales. Leading authority on the subject of linguistics. Writer, editor, lecturer, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1995. He is mainly known for his research work on English language studies, intonation and stylistics. He is also known for his work on the application of linguistics to religious, educational and clinical contexts, notably in the development of a range of linguistic profiling techniques for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. He is currently Honorary Professor of Linguistics at the University of Wales, Bangor, as well as being President of the UK National Literacy Association, among other professional activities.  
 
Peter K. Austin, United Kingdom. Linguist and Director of the Endangered Languages Academic Programme. Professor in Field Linguistics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Expert in Australian Aboriginal languages, and languages of eastern Indonesia.
 
Colin Baker, Wales. Professor at the University of Wales, Bangor. Expert in education and bilingualism.
 
Ayo Bamgbose, Nigeria. Linguist, African language expert and Professor Emeritus at the University of Ibadan. Expert in African languages and language policies.
 
Jean Claude Corbeil, Quebec. PhD in Linguistics from the University of Strasbourg. Former director of the French Language Bureau of Quebec and advisor to the Government of Quebec on language policy. 
 
M. Carmen Garmendia, Basque Country, Spain. Former Minister of Culture and Minister of Language Policy in the Basque Government.
 
François Grin, Switzerland. Professor of Economics at the University of Geneva and specialist in language, training and economics.
 
Monica Heller, Canada. Sociolinguistic and Professor at the University of Toronto. Expert in immigration. 
 
M. Carme Junyent, Catalonia. Professor in General Linguistics at Universitat de Barcelona. Current President of the Study Group on Endangered Languages (GELA).
 
Luis Enrique López, Bolivia. Professor at Universidad Mayor de San Simón, Cochabamba. Main advisor to the Training Programme in Bilingual Intercultural Education in the Andes.
 
Guillem López Casasnovas, Minorca, Spain. Economist and Adviser to the Bank of Spain. Professor of Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. 
 
Isidor Marí, Ibiza, Spain. Sociolinguist. Director of Humanities Studies at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). Expert in language policy and planning.
 
Marianne Mithun, United States of America. Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Researcher on minority languages in North America.
 
Juan Carlos Moreno, Madrid, Spain. Professor in General Linguistics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Author of many studies on world languages and linguistic diversity.
 
Peter Mühlhäusler, Australia. Professor of Linguistics at the University of Adelaide and Supernumerary Fellow of Linacre College, Oxford. He is specialist in language planning, ecolinguistics, Creole languages and intercultural communication.
 
Òscar Pujol, Catalonia. PhD in Sanskrit from Banaras Hindu University. Director of the Instituto Cervantes, New Delhi.
 
Xavier Sala i Martín, Catalonia. Internationally recognised economist and Professor of Economics at Columbia University and Visiting Professor of Economics at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. 
 
Joe Sheils, United Kingdom. Member of the Council of Europe. Head of the Council of Europe’s Department of Language Policy. Expert in education.
 
Jesús Tuson, Valencia, Spain. Professor of General Linguistics at Universitat de Barcelona. Author of several books on linguistics and the promotion of linguistic diversity.
 
Llorenç Valverde, Majorca, Spain. Professor in Computer Sciences and Artificial Intelligence and currently Vice-Rector of Technologies at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). Expert in Information and Communication Technologies.
 
Colin Williams, Wales. Sociolinguist and Professor at the University of Cardiff. Expert in Social Sciences, Human Geography and Language Planning.
