Linguistic Sustainability

Today, approximately 5,500 animal species around the world are endangered. Likewise, more than half of the world’s 6,000 languages that are spoken at present could disappear before the end of the century, according to UNESCO.

The planet will be ecologically sustainable if economic or industrial progress does not endanger the environment. In the same way, it will be socially sustainable if the survival of the world’s languages is guaranteed, irrespective of the number of speakers or political and economic power languages might have.

It is a question, in that case, of ensuring that languages exist in harmony, that the strength of some languages does not lead to the extinction of other weaker languages, and that languages coexist without establishing relationships of dominance or subordination.

For these reasons, at Linguamón – House of Languages, we consider that a global effort is needed for society to become aware of the importance of preserving the world’s languages and cultures.

We are working towards getting every government, from the local to the international level, committed to protecting and promoting languages. We are also working towards encouraging citizens to maintain an open attitude towards other cultures, without forgetting about their own. In short, Linguamón – House of Languages strives to secure recognition and dignity for every language and for each and every one of their speakers.

The world can develop and intercommunicate without the need to destroy the linguistic and cultural resources that identify us.
