The Government of Catalonia signs a cooperation agreement to set up the National Centre for Genomic Analysis in Catalonia

The Government of Catalonia and the Ministry of Science and Innovation have signed a cooperation agreement which will bring about the launch of the National Centre for Genomic Analysis, a new centre for high performance genomic sequencing to be set up in the Barcelona Science Park, aimed at ensuring Spain's competitive position in the strategic area of genomics.

The National Centre for Genomic Analysis will conduct a first pilot project related to the sequencing of samples from tumours, as part of Spain's contribution to the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), which will monitor the project. The aim of the ICGC is to obtain an exhaustive description of the genomic, transcriptomic and epigenomic alterations found in 50 types and sub-types of different tumours, in order to facilitate progress in research to improve the detection and treatment of these conditions.

As well as Spain eight other countries which are leaders in human genome research are taking part in the project: the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, India, France and the UK.
