The Department of Health has presented the new Hospital de Sant Joan Despí Moisès Broggi. This is the first hospital in Catalonia that has been created from scratch, and has been made possible with a €113 million investment by Generalitat de Catalunya.
The new 46,127 m2 facility has 310 conventional beds, 18 critical and semi-critical beds, 12 operating rooms, 18 recovery rooms, 24 outpatient major surgery beds, 53 surgeries, 21 test laboratories, 40 emergency cubicles and 13 observation rooms. It also has 36 hospital day-beds, 27 haemodialysis beds and a hyperbaric chamber.
In terms of healthcare activities, it is estimated that the hospital discharges 19,300 patients annually, with the surgery department carrying out more than 7000 in-patient operations and 8500 major outpatient operations. It is estimated that there will be around 240,000 external consultations and more than 82,000 accident and emergency cases handled each year.
The new Hospital de Sant Joan Despí Moisès Broggi will have capacity to serve more than 300,000 people from the 11 municipalities of Baix Llobregat. The hospital is between Avinguda del Baix Llobregat and Carrer Jacint Verdaguer, Carrer Josep Trueta and Carrer Sant Martí (next to TV3's headquarters). This location offers good access for the surrounding municipalities.
Priority has been given to public transport in order to ensure sustainable, fast and convenient travel to the hospital. Tram, bus, train, underground and taxis all serve the hospital.
The design of the building is aimed at reducing throughout the building's working life the impact of energy consumption. The design also aims to reduce emissions of CO2 and toxic substances into the atmosphere. Measures include solar panels on the roof of the building, helping to reduce the costs of producing domestic hot water.
Hospital de Sant Joan Despí Moisès Broggi is part of the Consorci Sanitari Integral (CSI), or integrated health consortium - a public health and social services organisation that manages a number of hospitals, basic health departments, old people's residences, rehabilitation centres and other services such as home-based and incapacity assessment services, within a catchment area that covers Barcelona, Hospitalet de Llobregat and Baix Llobregat.
